    LOS ANGELES — SEIU United Service Workers West janitors in the Bay area, Orange County, and Los Angeles approved tonight a new contract covering wages and protocols against sexual harassment and assault. The ratification of the contract averts a strike against unfair labor practices that janitors were ready to trigger had there been no agreement reached with ABM, ABLE, DMS, and other janitorial contracting companies.

  • Janitors Fast to end Rape on the Night Shift

    IN 2015, the PBS Frontline documentary Rape on the Night Shift was released,
    exposing widespread sexual harassment and rape of nightshift janitors in LA office buildings. As the union began showing the film and creating
    safe space for janitors to talk about their experiences, it became clear that members of USWW had experienced rape and violence on the job.

  • Supporting Black Workers

    In 2017, the security officer members of SEIU-USWW from LA and the Bay Area, decided to take on racial discrimination in the workplace as part of their contract campaign. African American members of USWW were seeing that employment discrimination was destroying traditionally black communities in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and they wanted to do something about it.

    After taking to the streets in July, more than 7,000 SEIU-United Service Workers West security officers in Los Angeles and the Bay Area have ratified a new four-year contract that will significantly improve the lives of working people and their families by bringing more racial and economic justice to communities throughout the state.
