On September 9th, hundreds of hotel and airport workers rallied at Los Angeles City Hall to celebrate the Olympic wage going into effect after the Los Angeles City Clerk announced the deceitful multi-million dollar referendum campaign funded by Delta, United, and the American Hotel and Lodging Association failed to qualify.
The Defend The Wage LA Coalition, comprised of SEIU-United Service Workers West (USWW), UNITE HERE Local 11, and Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), spent over two years pushing the legislation through City Hall, speaking up at City Council meetings, protesting at City Hall and LAX, and even fasting for three days before a Council vote. The wage actually passed over the summer, but the airlines and hotels spent millions of dollars in a deceitful campaign to try and bring the wage to the ballot. Airport workers fought back and won.
The new wage at LAX went into effect on September 8th and will bring all LAX workers to $30/hour by 2028. If you work at LAX and did not receive the new wage starting on September 8th, contact your Organizer.
