Starting A Movement Against Sexual Abuse

SEIU-USWW members and their actions to fight back against sexual abuse in the workplace are featured in the newly released version of “Rape on the Night Shift,” the groundbreaking PBS documentary.

Ya Basta photoThe original version of the documentary inspired members of our union to do something about the situation, and many worked with California Assembly Member Lorena Gonzalez to fight for and pass AB 1978 last year, to help prevent future violence of this kind. The legislation requires employer training and prevention plans, and toughens enforcement for employers who leave workers at risk.

Many SEIU-USWW members are involved in continuing the fight to protect janitors from rape and sexual harassment, and are meeting on an ongoing basis to work on legislative goals for upcoming years, which will focus on the implementation of AB 1978, including who will conduct the mandatory trainings and the curriculum, as well as how the State will enforce the contractor registry system.
